The Psychology of Clothing Colours

Colours have a big influence on what we choose to wear on a day-to-day basis. We choose different colours depending on a wide variety of factors - not just the occasion, but also how we feel and how we wish to be perceived. As we enter a new season, we at 2forjoy thought it might be a good time to find out a little more about the psychology of clothing colours...

new beginnings

Black is one of the most popular colour choices for clothing as it is so versatile and timeless. People wearing black are often seen as authoritative and powerful, but also sophisticated and elegant. Sending a message of power, authority and strength, it was the perfect colour to make a statement at the recent Golden Globes where many celebrities wore black to show solidarity with the ‘Times Up’ movement.

Grey is symbolic of balance and can give off a relaxed vibe, especially when paired with other complimentary shades. Being a neutral, it is a great addition to your wardrobe as it really does work with most other colours!

Wearing blue has a calming, soothing effect. Different shades of blue create differing feelings for example, deeper shades can be more comforting whilst lighter shades have been found to be more uplifting.

Bold, bright colours demand attention. Red is often thought of as empowering and esteem-boosting. It is also thought to stimulate energy, warmth and healing. Orange is full of energy and fun. It symbolises creativity, warmth and stimulates new possibilities. Wearing yellow is believed to make people feel happier and have a more positive outlook on life.

A more relaxed category of colour, pastels often make the individual wearing them seem more approachable. Light, soft and calming, they can lend an air of sophistication to neutral colours.

White represents new beginnings and is a symbol of balance and harmony. People wearing white are seen to be open, sincere and confident.

Here at 2forjoy we understand that colour plays a big role in the clothing that people purchase which is why we like to think that our range of slow fashion clothing is extremely varied. From our Black Shirt Dress to our Orange Pleat-Back Cardigan, there is a colour to suit everybody’s fashion requirements. What colour do you like to wear? How does it make you feel?
