The high street is filled by retailers trying to offer the cheapest price tag as they attempt to outdo each other. Of course, we can all be seduced by a real bargain, but most of the time you should consider just what’s being sacrificed for such a financial saving. Whether it’s been manufactured through cheap labour or it’s bound to rip after a couple of wears, fast fashion will always have a major downside.
2forjoy place the idea of ethical fashion at the heart of everything we do here. So, we thought it was about time we ran you through everything you need to know…
The first thing you need to know about the fashion industry as a whole is that 75% of the labour workforce is made up of women and girls. Particularly in developing countries, working conditions are incredibly poor and their pay is even worse, as women across the globe are consistently exploited. Just take a second and ask yourself whether you’d stand for working in an unsafe environment for a measly pay check? Didn’t think so.
Ethical fashion is all about standing up and saying that this system is unacceptable, and instead investing into an ethical alternative that stands up for women’s rights.
Make It Last
We’re all familiar with the expression “less is more”, and this is incredibly true when it comes to fashion. Despite the best efforts of social media and television, we don’t need a brand new outfit for every dinner, night out or special occasion- because items of clothing are made to be worn more than once. Because women are constantly being told that they need to look a certain way or fit a certain style, this promotes buying cheap clothes that can be thrown away once they’ve been worn.
Of course, this means that a lot of us are continuously pumping our money into an industry that exploits women on a global scale, but it also means we’re having an impact on the environment. A whopping 300,000 tonnes of clothing was binned last year in the UK alone, just to give you an idea of the scale of this issue.
Vivienne Westwood once stated that we should all “buy less, choose well, make it last” and choosing ethical fashion ensures that you’re opting for outfits that will do just that. Not only is our clothing of a higher quality, but purchasing from us also gives you the opportunity to spend your money on fashion that will last!
