The Environmental Cost of Fashion

Whilst it is obvious that the environment pays the price for the publics’ need for clothing, we tend to turn a blind eye. After all, it is much easier to pretend something isn’t happening. Here at 2forjoy we believe that we are heading towards the point of no return and we need to start changing the way we produce and consume clothing now before it becomes too late. After all, the environmental cost of fashion is gradually becoming too much for our planet to take. Read on to find out more…

The Problems

There are a lot of problems with the way that fashion is made, particularly when it comes to the fast fashion industry. Take cotton as an example. This fibre occupies just over 2% of the worlds cropland but accounts for almost a quarter of the worlds insecticide and pesticide use. All of these chemicals are then washed into the already scarce supply of fresh water, polluting it and making it unsafe. In addition to this, the increasing production of polyester and other synthetic fibres is contributing to a plastic epidemic. After all, tons upon tons of perfectly suitable polyester clothing is thrown into landfill every year where it lets off harmful gases like methane for hundreds of years because it is not biodegradable.

The Changes

Luckily there is still time to change the way that clothing is made in order to reduce the amount of pressure that is placed on the environment. In fact, these changes range from simple things like supporting and investing in ethical fashion to more front of the line adaptions like encouraging clothing companies to opt for chemical free and organic fibres instead of synthetic.

The Future

As it stands the fashion industry is one of the most harmful industries on the planet thanks to the unsustainable methods and principles that it relies on. In fact, fast fashion is the biggest culprit because it prefers to hide the ugly truth in place of profit. The future of the fashion industry relies on what we do at this moment in order to make the changes that will help our planet in the future. Ethical fashion alternatives not only use methods that reduce the impact on our planet, they aim to produce quality at the same time.

When it comes to fashion the team here at 2forjoy believe in creating clothing using methods that do not place as much of a burden on our planet which is why all of our attire is created with ethical fashion in mind. After all, ethicality and sustainability are the first steps towards crafting high quality attire that does not destroy the innocence of our beloved planet earth.
